Salem Reads 2018: Outcasts United
The Salem Public Library Foundation is proud to announce the second season of Salem Reads: One Book, One Community. Salem Reads is a community reads program that encourages a fondness for reading and the Library by inviting the entire city to read a common book. In February 2018 there will be a full month of programs to encourage discussions and activities around the themes of the book.

The Salem Reads Book Selection Committee has chosen Outcasts United by Warren St. John for our second year! Outcasts United is the real-life story of refugees seeking new lives set against the backdrop of a fading American town struggling to accommodate its new arrivals. Together, an inspiring group of refugees and a woman, who with tough love and fiery determination, changes an entire community for the better.

Copies of the book are currently available for checkout at the Salem Public Library and for sale at the Friends Book Store.  Check out the program guide (below) and participate in one of our many 2018 events, including the author lecture on Tuesday, February 27th. If you've already read Outcasts United, you can also try one of these titles!

Program Project Goals
The program goals of Salem Reads: One Book, One Community are to:
  • Strengthen the Library’s role in the cultural life of the Salem community by fostering a sense of community, bringing people together to read and discuss a common book
  • Increase Library visibility throughout Salem and reach readers not currently patrons Library
  • Attract a broader, more diverse population of Library users
  • Increase Library partnerships with community businesses and organizations.
How You Can Help Salem Reads Meet Our Goals
  • Become a Salem Reads business or individual sponsor joining the Salem Public Library Foundation Board members, Steering Committee members and individuals who have already donated toward the project
  • Promote the project among those in your social and professional circles
  • Join a committee for Salem Reads organization and programming events

The Salem Public Library Foundation Seeks Sponsorship for Salem Reads
Sponsorship at any level will help Salem Public Library to engage a diverse population of library users to come together to talk about important issues facing our community and society – immigration, education, and the pursuit of the American dream. More specifically, your donation will be used to purchase the chosen title in print and audio books for the library collection, as well as over 600 books to be given away at the Library and other locations in February 2018. It will help us bring the book's author to Salem for an evening lecture and day time presentation at a school. Sponsorships will also allow us to provide other programming such as panel discussions, documentary movies, musicians, book club programs, and high school/middle school literacy classroom kits. Please consider joining us in supporting Salem Reads!
